Advanced SQL for Crime Analysis

This webinar will build on the query methods overviewed in the 2021 CCIAA SQL for Crime Analysis Class. We will overview the sample queries previously demonstrated for administrative, strategic, and tactical Crime Analysis. Then we will move into more advanced queries involving cross apply, outer apply and pivot functions. Finally we will move into stored procedures that can be used for data cleaning, and transfer between databases. If time remains at the end we can have interactive question and answers to cover attendee questions.

BIO:

Matt is the Crime Analyst for the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. He is responsible for analyzing data to help the department be more effective through better information. His duties often range from identifying suspects and tracking offenders to analyzing data for patrol allocations, community meetings and funding requests. Matt enjoys the constant and evolving challenges of analyzing crime data to help improve efficiency.

Matt began his career in crime analysis in 2004 with Santa Rosa Police Department. In 2005 he completed his CA DOJ certificate in Crime and Intelligence Analysis. In 2006 Matt started with the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office where he is assigned to investigations and is the sole analyst for the agency.  He served as president of the Bay Area Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association from 2011 through 2014. He has also served on the IACA’s Standards Methods and Technology committee where he authored white papers on GIS and RMS requirements for crime analysis.

In 2007 Matt was awarded the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Excellence Award for his role in developing a crime analysis unit and improving access to departmental information.  In 2008 received the California Crime and Intelligence Analysts Association Innovations Award for his strategic and tactical work. In 2011 Matt attained CLEA certification from the International Association of Crime Analysts. In 2017 he was awarded a Medal of Merit for his work in response to the catastrophic Wine Country Fires. In 2019 he earned a Distinguished Service Award for his role in providing data and analytical support to the administrative, strategic and tactical missions of the Sheriff’s Office and Sonoma County Public Safety Consortium.

 Prior to crime analysis Matt served in the US Army Military Police for six years working a variety of jobs including patrol, dispatch, and combat support while server in Germany, Colorado, Hungary, and South Korea.  Upon completing military service Matt attended California State University, Sacramento where he earned a BA in Sociology emphasizing Criminology, with a minor in Criminal Justice.

While not working as an analyst Matt enjoys spending time with his wife and two boys, participating in outdoor activities and driving his 1966 Ford Galaxie 500.
